Schrader Excited Heading To Dega

TALLADEGA, Ala. – There’s probably no driver looking more forward to this weekend’s Aaron’s 499 at Talladega Superspeedway than Ken Schrader. Yes, drivers generally despise restrictor-plate racing, but for Schrader, Talladega presents an opportunity to get back on track.

Schrader had a dominant car at the last superspeedway race but a crash eliminated him from contention. Since then, the “M&M’s”® Racing Team has been beset by myriad problems and bad luck that has prevented Schrader from finishing up front.

Schrader is 32nd in the NASCAR Winston Cup points standings after a 36th-place finish at Martinsville Speedway last weekend. But Talladega presents hope for a good run.

Schrader ran well at Speedways in Daytona earlier this year. His “M&M’s”® Pontiac finished a strong fourth in the Budweiser Shootout, and then came home third in his Gatorade Twin 125-mile qualifying race.

In the 500, Schrader was strong, getting out front twice for 46 laps. But later in the event, he was caught up in a multi-car crash that damaged his car and ruined his chances.

The team has brought a new car to Talladega, and Schrader hopes it can perform well.

“I’m really excited to get down to Talladega,” Schrader said. “With the rules package we ran at Daytona earlier this season, the racing was a lot more like it used to be at the superspeedways. You really had to have a good handling car to put your car up front and stay there. The little “M&M’s”® car had a couple of great runs in Daytona, and we hope to have similar success at Talladega this weekend.”

History could be on Schrader’s side, too. He scored his initial Winston Cup victory at Talladega in 1988 and has won poles there in 1998 and ’99. In 34 career starts, he has one victory, six top-five and 11 top-10 finishes at the 2.66-mile superspeedway.
