Newman Hopes To Turn It Around At Dega

TALLADEGA, Ala. - It has been 18 months since Ryan Newman and ALLTEL Team Penske set a tire on the 2.5-mile Talladega Superspeedway. The team is hoping the October 2000 ARCA event and his career-first Daytona 500 will offer enough notes and experience for the Raybestos Rookie contender to get the job done in this weekend’s Aaron’s 499.

"We gathered a lot of really good notes and experience in Daytona," Newman said. "Plus, we’re taking the same car, so we feel pretty good about the weekend."

The team is bringing PRS-014, the same car used at Daytona in finishing seventh in their first 500. It is a car handed down from teammate Rusty Wallace and previously appeared in the Budweiser Shoot-out special event reserved for pole winners from the previous season.

In the 2000 ARCA event, Newman started 11th and finished 35th after being collected in an accident.

April is the cruelest month...This week (April 16-17) Ryan Newman and company are testing at the Richmond International Raceway in preparation for the Pontiac Excitement 400 on May 4.

Last season the team ran both Busch Series events at RIR, starting fourth and finishing 14th in the spring race, and starting second and finishing seventh in the fall event.

Next week (April 23-24) they will head out west to test at Sears Point Raceway in Sonoma, Calif., for their career first road course event before heading to Southern California for their first race at California Speedway.
