Hornaday Out At Foyt Racing

Ron Hornaday is out of the No. 14 A.J. Foyt racing Winston Cup ride after Friday’s race at New Hampshire International Speedway, a team spokesman confirmed Tuesday.

The team is “evaluating other drivers and hopes to have one signed in the coming weeks,” spokesman Michael Rompf said. Mark Green drove a second Foyt Pontiac at Atlanta, but neither he nor Hornaday qualified for Sunday’s NAPA 500.

Hornaday is in his rookie season in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series but has struggled with Foyt. He has a best finish of ninth, and that was in the season’s third race at Las Vegas.

Hornaday has failed to qualify for four races, including the past two as the team has run out of provisionals. Hornaday has used eight provisionals to start races this season and has qualified in the Top 10 four times.

The ninth-place finish at Las Vegas was his only top-10 result. The team has eight DNFs, with Hornaday crashing out of three races, dropping out of two with engine problems and having clutch, rear-end and transmission troubles in three other races.

He’s finished 25th or worse in 24 of the 31 races he’s made. The second half of the season has been particularly troubling, as he’s finished higher than 20th only twice in 15 races, not including three he didn’t qualify for.

Foyt is in his second season as a full-time Winston Cup owner. He went through three drivers – Mike Bliss, Dick Trickle and Rick Mast – last season, with Mast posting two top-10 finishes.

Hornaday came to Winston Cup from Dale Earnhardt Inc.’s Busch Series team, with which he won two races in 2000. But Earnhardt closed his Busch team in the offseason to start a third Winston Cup team, with Michael Waltrip driving, so Hornaday joined Foyt.

Hornaday is the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series all-time winner with 25 victories, and he won the NCTS championship in 1996 and 1998.
