ALLTEL News And Notes

MOORESVILLE, N.C. -- ALLTEL Team Penske driver Ryan Newman has completed his two remaining courses needed to complete his degree in Vehicle Structure Engineering from Purdue University.

Newman took the courses via the Internet from Catawba Valley College in Hickory, N.C., and completed them in May. The grades will now be transferred to Purdue, where Newman is expected to graduate in August.

He was a full-time student for four years prior to moving to North Carolina to begin his stock car racing career.

“I wouldn’t do anything different,” said Newman, who now has a pole and a top-five finish in only four races in the top-level NASCAR Winston Cup Series. “While I was at school it was like I had two full-time jobs working seven days a week. One was school five days a week, while the other was racing three or four days. But my family helped a lot by taking care of the racing side. I probably hurt myself by not studying as much on the weekends but in the end I met my goals and it all paid off.”

Welcome to the Windy City
In preparation for the July 14 NASCAR Busch Series race, ALLTEL Team Penske will test at the Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, Ill., June 19 and 20.

This is the Busch Series’ first visit to the 1.5-mile D-shaped tri-oval, located just southwest of Chicago. The Busch Series 300 is the next competitive event on Newman and ALLTEL Team Penske’s calendar.

Change of Plans
ALLTEL Team Penske has decided to forgo the remaining ARCA races on their schedule and instead focus on their Busch Series and Winston Cup events.

The decision was made after Newman’s fifth-place finish at Michigan International Speedway in the NASCAR Winston Cup K-Mart 400 June 10.

“We knew at the beginning of the year that the objective for Ryan was seat time,” said John Erickson, Penske Racing South team manager. “We’ve just decided the best thing for Ryan and the team is to concentrate on our Busch and Winston Cup races, in addition to some more testing. The beauty of this program is we can change the schedule to fit our needs, all with the goal of preparing for the full 2002 Winston Cup schedule in mind.”
