Tutor Takes Fall For Pettys

If a NASCAR Winston Cup team is running badly, more often than not it’s the driver or the crew chief that are expendable.

Wednesday, it was Mark Tutor, the crew chief for Petty Enterprises’ No. 44 Georgia-Pacific Dodge – driven by Buckshot Jones – who felt the brunt of his team’s early-season troubles. Tutor was released to make way for Bryant Frazier, who will now be calling the shots for driver Jones’ team on Sundays.

After five races in 2001, Jones is 40th in the Winston Cup points standings. Jones’ best finish so far this season was 19th at Atlanta. He finished 29th at Daytona, 35th at Rockingham, 36th at Las Vegas and 41st at Darlington.

“We’re fortunate to have someone like Bryant to move into this position,” said Petty Enterprises CEO Kyle Petty. “He’s a real team player who knows the ins and outs of this sport, both in the shop and at the track. He and Buckshot are going to work very well together.”

Frazier’s experience has helped him earn his promotion to Winston Cup crew chief. The 36-year-old Alabama native spent the past five years as a crew chief for Joe Gibbs’ NASCAR Busch Series teams.

“I’m pretty excited with what they have here at Petty Enterprises, and with the chance to work more closely with Buckshot,” Frazier said. “With his talents, we can go places with this team.

“I’ve known Buckshot for two or three years now. We would park next to him a lot in the Busch garage last season so we got the chance to know each other pretty well. He’s a winner and so are these guys at Petty Enterprises.”
