Robinson Chases Cup Dreams

Shawna Robinson – who announced last November that she and car owner Michael Kranefuss planned on running selected Winston Cup events this season – said Wednesday that she and MK Motorsports are also hoping for a full-time Cup ride in 2002.

That’s going to depend on sponsorship, though.

MK Motorsports and Robinson – an ARCA regular who will also run some Busch Series events this year for Michael Waltrip’s team – has no sponsor for the six events they’ll attempt to qualify for this year, and no sponsor lined up for any type of full-time ride in the future.

Michael Kranefuss, a former Winston Cup car owner with driver Jeremy Mayfield, said he’d put up the money this season, but not in 2002.

Robinson – who will attempt to become the first female driver to start a Winston Cup race since 1989 – plans on making Winston Cup start No. 1 on April 29 (at California), followed by races at Michigan, Chicago, Indianapolis, Kansas and Homestead.

“I’m excited about seeing what we can do with a brand new team,” Kranefuss said. “We have a driver who has a chance to really go somewhere. Shawna doesn’t want to be labeled as the only female, but that’s a fact and it explains some of the publicity she gets.”

Robinson will attempt to make her first Busch Series start for Waltrip on March 31 at Texas Motor Speedway. She’ll also attempt to make races at Nashville and Talladega in April.

Robinson began racing in NASCAR more than 10 years ago, making her debut by finishing third in a Goody’s Dash Series race at Daytona International Speedway in 1988. Later that same season, Robinson scored a victory at New Asheville (N.C.) Speedway to become the first woman to win a NASCAR touring event.

She made her Busch Series debut in 1991. Three years later, she claimed a pole at Atlanta Motor Speedway, making her the only woman to lead a starting field to the green flag in a Busch Series race.
