Lepage Still In No 4

Apparently, driver Kevin Lepage is doing something right in Larry McClure’s eyes.

And if he keeps it up, he just may have a full-time ride in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series with McClure’s No. 4 Kodak Chevrolet team.

McClure has announced that Lepage, who gave the Kodak team its best finish of the season (15th) last Sunday in the Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway, will once again drive the car this Sunday in the Harrah’s 500 at Texas Motor Speedway. Lepage replaced Robby Gordon, who was released as the team’s driver late last week.

Lepage will also test for the upcoming Winston Cup race at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway on Tuesday and Wednesday. A permanent driver for the Kodak Chevy has yet to be announced, but Lepage appears to be the frontrunner.

Lepage lost his Winston Cup ride with Roush Racing when his No. 16 team folded at the end of last season. He had been driving in selected Busch Series races with his own team in 2001 prior to last Sunday’s race at Bristol.

“I am pleased to go to Texas with Morgan-McClure Motorsports,” Lepage said. “We will continue to build on the relationship we started last weekend in Bristol."

In addition to his duties for Morgan-McClure Motorsports, Lepage will also attempt to qualify his No. 71 Chevrolet for Saturday’s Busch Series event. Qualifying for the 300-miler is set for Thursday afternoon.

Lepage said he and the Kodak team were extremely pleased with their effort in last Sunday’s Food City 500.

“I was in Abingdon (Va.) Monday at the race shop working with the guys and getting the seats fitted,” Lepage said. “You know how drivers are about that comfort level in a race car. We talked about how well things worked out on Sunday. Everyone communicated great. That is a huge step in the right direction.

“We rebounded from some obstacles during the race and went away happy with a top-15 finish. The performance of the Kodak race team is a testimony to how they never give up, they keep digging and make the best out of a potentially bad situation.”

Lepage turned in one of his best performances of the year at Texas last season in the DirecTV 500. He drove his No. 16 Roush Racing Taurus to a fifth-place finish after qualifying second.

“I really like racing at Texas,” Lepage said. “It reminds me some of Charlotte or Atlanta, or maybe a combination of both. For some reason, I excel at that type of track. We had good runs going the past few visits to Texas. For two years, I got caught up in wrecks. Last year, I started second and had a top-five finish. We led a few laps.”

Obviously, Lepage’s ultimate hope is to remain as the driver of the Kodak Chevy.

“Being able to work with Larry and all of the players at Morgan-McClure is a neat deal,” he said. “We will go to Texas with the same attitude as Bristol. Larry is a fierce competitor. I know they will give me 110 percent to go do the best job I can do.

“We will try to bring the No. 4 Monte Carlo home in the best position possible. Beyond that I do not know. If we test well at Martinsville this week, then maybe I can drive there, also.”
