Driver Handicaps For Atlanta

5908Jpg
Bobby Labonte- Labonte is the undisputed master of Atlanta among active drivers. In the last nine races held here, Labonte has won four of them, and only missed the top 5 once. Odds on favorite this weekend.

Jeff Burton- Burton was leading this race last year when he blew a tire and hit the wall hard. Four top 5 finishes in twelve career starts at Atlanta.

Dale Jarrett- DJ won at Atlanta in 1997 and has finished second here four times. Usually a contender though last year Dale was off song in both races.

Ricky Rudd- Rudd has only one top 10 finish in his last eight races at Atlanta. Best career finish of second back in 1993.

Tony Stewart- Stewart has yet to figure this track out. No career top 10s in four stabs at Atlanta. Normally runs well at Charlotte, so it may just be a fluke thing.

Rusty Wallace- Last won here in 1993, but only has two top 5 finishes at Atlanta since. Made his first career Winston Cup start here back in 1980 and finished 2nd. Will probably trade you a truck full of Miller for it if you have a photo of Rusty sporting an afro that day.

Mark Martin- Martin won here in 1991 and 1994. Had four straight top fives at Atlanta before finishing 40th here last Fall.

Jeff Gordon- Gordon has won at Atlanta three times, including the Fall race of 1998 when he celebrated a championship after the rain shortened event. Top ten finishes in both races here last year.

Ward Burton- Burton was dominating the Atlanta race last Fall when a late caution allowed Jerry Nadeau to close the gap and restart the race right on the rear bumper of the 22 car. Ward finished third here that day, one of only two career top 5s at Atlanta.

Steve Park- Park was badly injured practicing at Atlanta during his rookie season. Has only scored one top five here, but runs well at Atlanta's sister track, Charlotte.

Mike Skinner- Skinner has known his share of heartaches at Atlanta. He's crashed hard and was leading this race last Spring when he popped an engine. Still looking for his first top five at Atlanta but normally runs better than his finishes indicate.

Johnny Benson- Failed to qualify for this race last year. Has had three career top 10s at the track.

Matt Kenseth- Two career Cup starts at Atlanta. Was running strong in this race last year when he blew an engine. Top 10 finish here last Fall.

Joe Nemechek- Nemechek finished 5th in this race last year, his only career Atlanta top 5 in fourteen attempts.

Dale Earnhardt Jr.- Don't look for live telemetry from the car this weekend. During his limited Cup schedule back in 1999 Earnhardt scored his best career Atlanta finish, 14th. Third in the Busch race that year. Also typically strong at Charlotte and Texas, the sister tracks to Atlanta.

Terry Labonte- Terry scored a pair of top 5 finishes at Atlanta during his championship 1996 seasons. Hasn't had a top five at Atlanta since. No wins here, but was second in this race in 1996.

Ken Schrader- Schrader won at Atlanta in 1991. At which point the crowd stood up in their bell bottoms and applauded him before heading off to their El Caminos for the ride home.

Sterling Marlin- Since going full time in Winston Cup in 1987 Marlin has managed only three career top 5 finishes at Atlanta in 28 starts. But Marlin is on a roll and those Dodge engines seem to be putting out plenty of power. Could be this week's dark horse bet.

Jerry Nadeau- Nadeau won his first Winston Cup race here last Fall. Amazingly enough his best career finish at Atlanta prior to that was 20th.

Other Notables:

Bill Elliott- Bill swept both Atlanta races in 1985 and 1992. It's been a long time since his hometown crowd in Dawsonville could fire up the sirens to celebrate Elliott winning a points race, but Bill looked strong last weekend prior to the contact with the 01 car.
