2001: Chapter 1

Howdy Y’all.

I know Speedweeks officially got started more than a week ago with that 24 Hours of Boredom thingy, but for those of us out there that like a little passin’ and cars runnin’ as tight as stink on a skunk, the real racin’ season got started on Sunday with that Bud Shootout.

So… without further doo doo… let’s kick off the 2001 NASCAR season with all the highlights and lowlights of this here past weekend.

*With all the dern money Dodge has thrown into NASCAR – not only with its racin’ program, but with advertisin’ and the like – is anybody really surprised they magically changed from the quality of a Cal Wells machine durin’ practice to the sleekest vehicles on the track durin’ qualifyin’? Not me.

*Kinda ironic that Dodge starts its return by sandbaggin’ at the beach, ain’t it?

*Everybody knows a mandated aero package that makes the fast cars slower and the slow cars faster ain’t what racin’ is all about, but that’s the way it is y’all. Deal with it. Dale Jarrett provided so much whine about the cheesy rules that half the dern audience got tipsy.

*The best sponsor of the weekend had to be for this feller in the ARCA series. No kiddin’, this guy was drivin’ the “Pork, The Other White Meat Ford”

*Speakin’ of sponsors, can we stop with all this “presented by” stuff? If a race is sponsored by one company… something like the NAPA 320… how is it then presented by somebody else… the NAPA 320, presented by Kmart? That don’t make no sense. Pretty soon, just to get more dern money outta folks, NASCAR is gonna – mark my words – have races with titles like this… The NAPA 320, presented by Kmart, hosted by ACDelco, admired by Jiffy Lube, loved by Featherlite and paid for by Coke, with food provided by Outback Steakhouses.

*Lastly on sponsors… How happy ya think Jeff Burton and Mark Martin are to have Kurt Busch aboard this year? He ain’t got no sponsor, which means the money that team is spendin’ comes straight outta Jack Roush’s pockets, which means that money ain’t bein’ spent towards Mark’s or Jeff’s machines. Welcome aboard, rook.

*On to the Bud Shootout. Here’s some of the million things that I seen…

*Ted Musgrave (in a Junie Donlavey backup car) and Jeremy Mayfield (Mr. DNF) fall out of the race first. Shock!!!!!

When Fox is doin’ the lineup, and show the drivers with their cars, there weren’t no logos on the dern cars? That means one of two things. Either they spent billions and still can’t figure out the technology to do such, or (more likely) they’re chargin’ the sponsors a fee to have their logo appear at that time.

Anyone happen to catch the 167 times they showed that commercial of Bill Elliott’s Dodge fallin’ out of an apple tree in the past week? Enough!

Anybody surprised the first words outta Darrell Waltrip’s mouth were on the topic he pretty much stayed on the rest of the day… Darrell Waltrip.

Somebody please stop that Dick Berggron, Bergin, Berggeron…whatever… from yellin’ all the dern time. I about wore out my volume button movin’ it up and down every time he started and stopped talkin’.

Could that running order across the top of the screen be any more annoyin’? Y’all should know that continuous movement with the cars and continuous movement with that thing ain’t good on the eyes. We know ya gotta get that Bud logo across the screen 1,000 times (even more annoyin’), but it ain’t worth laser surgery.

Shore was good to hear Larry McReynolds tell folks the cars was “on sync” and Jeff Hammond say things like “this here” on the air. Bout time we had real Engerlish spoked durin’ a race.

All in all, I shore did like the Bud Shootout. Two tires or four, when to pit, who to follow and when to lead… good stuff. Other than the several races I – and a few million other people - won’t be able to see because of the new television package, this should be a great season.

I’ll talk at y’all next week… I reckon.

I shore do like talkin’ with y’all, so please send any questions or comments ya have about racin’ or my columns to BubbaBurr@AOL.com. I promise to answer’m all.
