Kenseth Quick Again At Daytona

DAYTONA BEACH – Rusty Wallace, Dale Jarrett and Ricky Rudd may have clocked the fastest laps (technically), but it’s Matt Kenseth once again who walks away from Daytona International Speedway as the fastest man around.

Huh?

Kenseth – who had the first and second-fastest speeds in yesterday’s test session for Fords – clocked a lap of 181.539 mph around the 2.5-mile track on Tuesday without the help of a draft. Wallace, Jarrett and Rudd – all running just over 183 mph – hooked up in a draft to surpass Kenseth’s time.

"Today was another good day for this team," Kenseth said. "The car felt the same as it did yesterday. We thought would could change some stuff out to make sure it would handle the same, and we're real happy with the car.

"We didn't do any drafting out there today, so we're looking forward to tomorrow's drafting session. We're pretty confident that our car will be good enough to qualify decent when we come back."

Wallace was the fastest of the three-car draft party, running 183.292.

Running in his new Cal Wells ride, Ricky Craven posted the second-fastest speed for a car not in the draft. Craven just announced last week that he’d be steering the No. 32 Tide Ride in 2001.

"All in all, I think we've got some really good engines and some pretty nice cars, but we'll find out more when all of the other manufacturers run," said Mark Martin, who posted a fast speed of 180.926 mph. "As far as Fords go, we're within striking distance. Drafting here isn't a problem for us, so we're coming back tomorrow to see if we can find some more qualifying speed. We haven't really focused on drafting, and we're more interested in making aerodynamic gains. That won't put us on top of the speed chart, but we know we'll be fine in the draft when the Daytona 500 rolls around."

Testing at Daytona continues on Wednesday morning with the Fords wrapping up around noon (ET). GM machines will hit the track for two days of testing beginning Thursday.
