UPS Delivers For Jarrett

HAMPTON, Ga. - UPS has delivered sponsorship to the Robert Yates Racing team and driver Dale Jarrett. Now Jarrett and his crew will try to deliver some victories and a NASCAR Winston Cup championship to UPS.

As anticipated for the last several months, the popular parcel service announced Friday morning it would sponsor Jarrett’s No. 88 Ford beginning in 2001. Yates said the deal is for four years, running through the 2004 campaign.

The car will sport a much different paint scheme. Instead of the red, white and blue of Ford Quality Care that has covered the 88 Taurus for several years, the car will be colored brown, white and yellow with a huge UPS logo on the hood.

"Is everyone surprised?" Jarrett quipped jokingly to the media gathered at the long-awaited announcement in the Atlanta Motor Speedway infield media center. "It’s the best kept secret in the garage. But we’re excited with what we’ve been able to accomplish here in the last five years with Robert Yates to be able to bring a sponsor like UPS to the sport. We’ll do our best to make them proud over the next four years.

"Having the UPS shield on the hood of my car means a great deal to me and everyone associated with the No. 88 team. We’re representing a lot of people - 358,000 UPS employees - and we take that very seriously. That’s an incredible fan base to have to try and please, but we’re excited about the challenge and the growth of our relationship with UPS employees across America and around the world."

Yates said he is just relieved to get the announcement behind him and the team.

"Selecting a sponsor is the most important off-track move we can make in this business," Yates said. "UPS is renowned for reliability and commitment to both its customers and employees. It’s very gratifying to have my name associated with a company of that caliber and character."

Jarrett won the 1999 Winston Cup championship, but has won only two races this season and is currently fourth in the points standings.

Two 30-second television commercials with Jarrett and the No. 88 UPS car will run during Sunday's broadcast of the NAPA 500 from Atlanta Motor Speedway.
