Waltrip Leaving Ultra Heading To DEI

RacingOne.com has learned that NAPA will sponsor the car Michael Waltrip will drive for DEI in the Winston Cup Series next season.

Michael Waltrip hasn’t found victory lane after more than 450 Winston Cup races, but Dale Earnhardt Inc. is hoping to steer him in the right direction.

On Wednesday, DEI will announce Waltrip as their third Winston Cup team driver – joining Steve Park and Dale Earnhardt Jr. – and also announce that NAPA will sponsor the team.

Though Waltrip announced earlier this season that he’d stay with the Ultra Motorsports team he currently works with, this is an opportunity that may be too hard to pass up.

NAPA has been with DEI for a number of seasons, and sponsored the Craftsman Truck Series teams that Ron Hornaday drove to titles in 1996 and 1998. Hornaday currently steers the NAPA-sponsored Busch Series car for DEI.

With the Busch Series getting a far smaller piece of the new television deal signed by NASCAR for next year, there’s little surprise that current Busch and truck series sponsors are looking to make the move to Cup.
