Musgrave To Drive For SABCO

MOORESVILLE, N.C. -- Ted Musgrave will drive the No. 01 car for Team SABCO this weekend at Pocono and at the Brickyard 400 on Aug. 5 in place of fallen driver Kenny Irwin.

Out of respect for Irwin and his memory, Team SABCO and BellSouth have chosen to permanently change the number of both the NASCAR Winston Cup and Busch Series entries to No. 01 effective immediately. Irwin was fatally injured in a practice crash at the New Hampshire International Speedway on July 7th in preparation for the thatlook.com 300.

"Kenny was the future of the No. 42 teams," said Felix Sabates, owner of Team SABCO. "To put someone else in his seat with his number wouldn't feel right. I spoke with his parents (Reva and Kenny, Sr.) and they were very appreciative and supportive of what we wanted to do."

A new design on the No. 01 Chevrolet, as well as Musgrave, will debut at Pocono, Pa., Raceway for the Pennsylvania 500. Musgrave, who is testing the Team SABCO/BellSouth entry at Gateway International Raceway today and Tuesday, will be the driver for the next two Winston Cup events.

"We're in the process of refocusing our efforts and looking towards the 2001 season, but at the same time, the entire team is trying to get through a very difficult time," Sabates said. "We are looking for the best available driver in the short term and the best available driver in the long term."

An announcement concerning the driver of the Winston Cup entry for the 2001 season and beyond is expected to take place at the end of the season. Additionally, the team is evaluating drivers for the Busch Series entry with a decision coming prior to the Food City 250 at the Bristol, Tenn., Motor Speedway.
