"We are certainly happy to return to NASCAR Winston Cup Racing and the No. 16 team," said Kevin McAuliffe, senior vice president of marketing for TV Guide Networks. "We were pleased with our involvement with Roush and the team last season and felt we were able to harness the power of NASCAR to bring a tremendously family-friendly promotion to our cable affiliates and consumers across the country. In coordination with FamilyClick.com, we are currently planning several exciting off-track promotions for fans. This will fit nicely with our efforts to promote quality family programming across all of our platforms - TV Guide magazine, TV Guide ChannelSM, TV Guide OnlineSM and TV Guide InteractiveSM."
TV Guide served as primary sponsor of the No. 16 car last season, taking over for Primestar on April 11, 1999, at the Food City 500 in Bristol, Tenn. In the final two-thirds of the season, TV Guide developed an extensive off-track program that included a 12-city promotional tour with the No. 16 Ford Taurus and driver Kevin Lepage. TV Guide and FamilyClick.com are currently planning a similar 10-12 city promotional tour, as well as several other co-branding marketing initiatives.
TV Guide has traditionally been successful with NASCAR connections. The TV Guide magazine NASCAR covers, which run at the beginning of each season, have consistently sold between 11 and 22 percent more copies than cover sales over an average of the three prior weeks. The February 1999 multiple NASCAR covers rank as number two in the 1999 top ten best selling newsstand issues.
"We are thrilled to work with TV Guide in a sport which reflects a strong family-based message," said Tim Robertson, FamilyClick.com chief executive officer. "Our focus on providing a safe Internet experience for children and families is an extension of the quality content we originally established at The Family Channel - where we were also committed to NASCAR sponsorship with the Roush team. The addition of TV Guide on this program will allow us to create additional outreach opportunities. It also connects us with a company equally committed to providing trusted sources of positive entertainment and content for today's families."
With TV Guide on board, Lepage and crew chief Pat Tryson proved to be a formidable combination in 1999. Lepage scored his first top five of his Winston Cup career in September at Darlington, which made him eligible for the Winston No-Bull $1 million bonus at Talladega last October.
"We are thrilled to have TV Guide rejoin our No. 16 FamilyClick.com team," said team owner Jack Roush. "TV Guide was a strong partner of ours last season and we look forward to a successful 2000. The No. 16 team has shown a great deal of potential this season and has had some tremendous finishes. With TV Guide aboard, the team should continue to post the strong results that we have grown to expect from them."
