Jarrett Takes Bud Pole At Daytona

  • Starting Lineup

Teammates Dale Jarrett and Ricky Rudd were the cars to beat in qualifying for the Pepsi 400 at Daytona International Speedway, just as they were in February for the Daytona 500.

Jarrett, who is attempting to sweep the season schedule at Daytona, put his Ford on the front row with a speed of 187.547. Jarrett knocked Rudd off the pole just minutes after Rudd had taken it away from Bill Elliott with a speed of 187.122. Elliott will start third. Rookie Dave Blaney turned a surprising 186.676, and Mark Martin qualified fifth at 186.212.

Ward Burton, Tony Stewart, Jerry Nadeau, Jeff Burton and Elliot Sadler round out the top 10 qualifiers.

Rain delayed the qualifying session by 30 minutes, and the practice session before qualifying was shortened because of the persistent rain. In fact, during the last portion of qualifications a light rain was falling. Dale Earnhardt, who qualified 18th, Dale Earnhardt Jr., who qualified 30th, and Stewart were among those drivers to qualify during the light rain.

Rookies were impressive during first-round qualifying, with five posting top-25 speeds. Besides Blaney, Ed Berrier qualified 11th, Stacy Compton 13th, Matt Kenseth 22nd, and Mike Bliss 24th.

Darrell Waltrip, in his last visit to Daytona, posted a 183.902, good for 31st.

Second round qualifying will be run at 4:30 p.m. ET Friday, and the Pepsi 400 will start at 8 p.m. ET Saturday night under the lights.
