Bidyno Poll:/B/I Tony Is Grrreat

Not that this teeny-tiny speck of a column is going to change the mind of Bill France Jr. or Mike Helton, but we have a beef with the NASCAR points system. We understand that it rewards consistency, racing for all positions on the track, and heroic garage work -- but where does winning fit in?

After battling most of his rookie 1999 season and coming frustratingly close to winning, Tony Stewart finally won a few races late in the season and was elated. He was a winner. But now, he has accepted the NASCAR driver's mentality, one that ultimately tarnishes our perception of otherwise brilliant, win-filled careers (see: Mark Martin).

Just listen to his logic. After winning the MBNA Platinum 400 at Dover two weeks ago, Stewart said, "We need to have more days like this, but I'll trade wins for consistency."

What? Finish around 8th every week? You'd trade that for winning some races sandwiched around a couple of frustrating finishes? That's how you begin to think when winning a race merely nets you 3 percent more points than the second-place driver.

But there is one place winning does pay off: The Dyno Poll. Sorry to rain on your parade Tony, for your second victory in a row in the Kmart 400 at Michigan Speedway, you'll just have to be our No. 1 this week.
