ELKHART LAKE, Wis. - Brendan Gaughan outlasted the competition and the elements to win Saturday’s Gardner Denver 200 at Road America.

Gaughan inherited the lead from Alex Tagliani, who ran out of fuel while the field was under the race's final caution for Justin Marks after his tank also went dry. The chain of events set up a green-white-checkered finish and Gaughan outran Tagliani, Kevin O'Connell and Chase Elliott.

The win was the first for Gaughan in the Nationwide Series, coming in his 98th start. The race, held partially in wet weather conditions, marked only the third time in Nationwide Series history that teams had to utilize Goodyear's rain tires.

"I love racing in the rain, it's fun," Gaughan said. "When you're good at it, it makes it even more fun.

"I haven't smelled blood in a long time, that's something I've been lacking lately, that killer attitude. When it started to rain, even without the wiper blade, I started to smell blood and said, 'I'm coming.'

"It's fun to watch guys who haven't done it in the rain. They don't understand the rain line, and fortunately for me, I did."

Tagliani, driving the No. 22 Team Penske Ford, battled back from restarting 23rd with slick tires to match his career-best finish of second.

"Maybe I threw a bad spell on myself because I said it was impossible that I was going to win this race, like something's going to happen, and then on the white flag, something happened," Tagliani said. "It's what it is. It's not in the cards. You have to be quick, you have to have a good car and it has to be in the cards, and if it's not, you just have to take whatever comes to you."

O'Connell's third-place finish was his first top 10 in three races at Road America. Elliott was the highest finishing rookie in fourth with JJ Yeley rounding out the top five.

Sam Hornish Jr., who was one of the drivers that pitted under the final caution, led a race-high 25 laps and finished 12th driving the No. 54 for Joe Gibbs Racing.

“We were having some issues with drive off, to be able to put the power down coming off the corner, even in the dry conditions, so when it got wet I knew that was going to be worse," Hornish said. "We were just trying to take care of the rear tires when we could and even when it dried off we started to catch up to the 22 and the 2, but everyone with new tires was able to get away from us and then when we pitted there we paid at the end. We were nervous that we were going to run out of fuel, then we got ran into from behind and it just killed the right rear tire and I think we lost about six spots on the last lap."

Regan Smith, who finished 13th, leads the point standings by 10 points over Elliott Sadler.
