FONTANA, Calif. - Kyle Busch will start 39th in today’s 40-car NASCAR Nationwide race at Auto Club Speedway after his car failed inspection and he didn’t get a chance to qualify.

Elliott Sadler won the pole and will start alongside Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Matt Kenseth. Ty Dillon starts third with Joey Logano fourth and Chase Elliott fifth.

Adam Stevens, crew chief for Busch’s team, said that the team originally failed inspection because their wheel studs were too short. After fixing that, Busch’s team encountered other issues when they went back through inspection.

“We had too much skew in it,’’ Stevens said, referring to the body being offset to the chassis. “We didn’t do anything to change the skew but the numbers jumped across the platform. We started backing skew out of it a little bit at a time and the numbers aren’t moving. For some reason, the adjustments haven’t moved the needle.’’

Busch’s car went through inspection four times during the 25-minute first round and had not passed when the session ended. Without completing a lap, Busch was relegated to starting at the rear of the field.

John Darby, NASCAR’s managing director of competition, said that axle housing alignment was not correct on the rear of Busch’s car.

Trevor Bayne’s team also had the same issue and had to go through inspection multiple times. Bayne’s team fixed the issue in time for him to make a qualifying attempt in the first round. He advanced to the second and will start 13th.

“The first time we had an issue we tried to fix it and it somehow went the wrong way,’’ Bayne said. “I think (the car) will still be good. It didn’t change anything major. We’re talking about thoustandths of an inch. It’s such a fine line. You max it out to get all the speed. Obviously, we don’t intentionally cross lines.’’
