The suspensions of two Richard Childress Racing crewmembers for allegedly assaulting Nelson Piquet Jr. and a associate were upheld Friday during an appeals hearing.
A three-member National Stock Car Racing Appeals Panel chose to uphold the original penalties handed down by NASCAR to Thomas Costello and Michael Scearce, both crewmembers for Brian Scott's No. 2 Nationwide Series team. The pair was suspended four races and each fined $15,000 for their involvement in an altercation with Piquet Jr. and a friend after last month’s Nationwide Series race at Richmond Int’l Raceway.
Costello and Scearce were arrested and charged with misdemeanor assaults by Henrico County authorities and face a June court date.
The three members chosen from a pool to serve on Friday’s panel were broadcaster Dr. Dick Berggren, Atlanta Motor Speedway president Ed Clark and Iowa Speedway CEO Doug Fritz. The decision was unanimous.
The suspensions will begin next week at Dover but the appeal could go before Chief Appellate Officer John Middlebrook, although no decision has yet been made by RCR.
