DOVER, Del. - AJ Allmendinger will drive a Nationwide Series car for Penske Racing next month at Road America.
Travis Geisler, the team's competition director, told Motor Racing Network of Penske Racing's plans Friday morning. Allmendinger tested with the team earlier this week at Virginia International Raceway.
The Johnsonville Sausage 200, the first of three road races on the 2013 schedule, is slated for Saturday, June 22. That's the day before the Sprint Cup Series race in Sonoma, Calif. Penske Racing has used its Cup Series drivers in the No. 22 Ford this season but with the distance between the two venues, it was decided that Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano would remain in California. That provides Allmendinger with this opportunity. He’ll be a teammate to Sam Hornish Jr.
Allmendinger has been driving for Penske Racing’s IndyCar program this season. He finished seventh in last weekend’s Indianapolis 500, his third race with the team this year. He’s driving for Penske Racing this weekend in the IndyCar races at Detroit on Saturday and Sunday.
"AJ is somebody that's in the fold right now, and somebody we have a lot of experience with and know is a talented road-course racer," Geisler said. "It made sense."
Geisler added that this week's test at VIR went well.
"He was on it," Geisler said of Allmendinger. "He had a lot of speed. He’s so easy to get along with and so easy to work with. It was fun to have him back."
Updated: 6/1 - Penske announced today that Allmendinger is also doing Mid-Ohio Nationwide race.
Motor Racing Network - "The Voice of NASCAR" - will have live coverage of the Johnsonville Sausage 200 on Saturday, June 22, beginning at 4:30 p.m. (ET) - with live streaming at MotorRacingNetwork.com.
