Busch Does It Again

Nothing can go wrong for Kurt Busch this weekend.

Driving the No. 39 Penske Truck Rental Dodge, Busch captured his first career NASCAR Busch Series pole in only his sixth start with a fast lap of 121.526 mph around Watkins Glen International.

This is the first time that a driver swept both the Busch Series and NEXTEL Cup Series poles since Penske Racing teammate Ryan Newman achieved the feat last fall in Texas. Coincidentally, Newman was driving the No. 39 Penske Truck Rental Dodge back then as well.

Road racer Scott Pruett qualified second with Busch Series championship leader Kevin Harvick, Ron Fellows and Newman rounding out the top five starting positions.

Boris Said, Robby Gordon, P.J. Jones, Jamie McMurray and Denny Hamlin rounded out the top 10.

The NASCAR Busch Series used a “European Style” qualifying format for the second time this season.

The format, which was introduced in the Mexico City race earlier this season, saw groups of five or six drivers making as many fast laps as possible in a five-minute period. The groups were arranged using practice speeds with the fastest going out last in qualifying.

Eduardo Troconis, John Finger and Stan Silva Jr. failed to make today’s field.

Busch Series drivers will return to action in a short while as today’s Zippo 200 takes the green flag at 2 p.m. (ET). MRN Radio offers radio coverage of the event while NBC will telecast the race on television.
