Harvick Happy In Mexico

Count Kevin Harvick among the drivers who are thrilled to be racing Sunday in Mexico City and thinks NASCAR needs to take its sport outside the United States in order to help it grow.

"I think racing in Mexico will prove to be a great move for our sport in the future," said Harvick, who will start 11th in Sunday's Telcel-Motorola 200. "The reaction we received from the fans last year was outstanding. They fans were unbelievable, and I expect the same reaction this year."

After a successful first venture suth of the border last season, NASCAR bringing the Busch Series back to Mexico in 2006 was a no-brainer. Harvick thinks that with a year under its belt, the series will connect even more with the Mexcian race fans this trip.

"I think you will see a lot of cars painted differently than they usually are to connect with the Mexican culture," he said. "There are also going to be handful of Mexican drivers competing this year. This gives them the opportunity to see how competitive the NASCAR Busch Series really is."

Harvick came up one spot short of winning last year's inaugural Mexico City race, which considering what he was dealing with, was an even more impressive accomplishment.

"I got really sick last year, so I didn't get to enjoy it like I should have," Harvick remembered. "All in all, I think it is a really unique experience. It is a lot of fun, and I really enjoy road racing so I am really looking forward to the trip back."

Harvick is one of a growing number of NEXTEL Cup regulars who will run a full Busch Series slate this year as well, a decision that was made for both business and pleasure.

"We decided to run the full Busch Series schedule before NASCAR changed the impound schedule," Harvick said. "However, with NASCAR backing off practice time, limiting our tests and limiting the amount of tires available, I think it will give us a chance to understand the tire pressures and how they are wearing. I also enjoy running in the Busch Series because it gives me a chance to do what I love without all the pressure of the Cup Series."

Sunday's Telcel-Motorola 200 will take the green flag at 2 p.m. (ET) and be televised live on FOX with radio coverage airing on MRN.
