Busch On Busch Pole At RIR

It was a record shattering day at Richmond International Raceway. During today's qualifying runs for the FUNAI 250 NASCAR Busch Series race, 14 drivers smashed the mark set by Dale Earnhardt, Jr. two years ago.

Leading the way was Kyle Busch, younger brother of front-running NASCAR NEXTEL Cup series driver Kurt Busch. Kyle's 20.874 second (129.348mph) lap edged out that of NASCAR NEXTEL Cup regular Jamie McMurray (20.896 s/ 129.211mph). All of the drivers credited the new layer of billiard table-smooth asphalt for the faster speeds.

The afternoon's practice session was a preview of the later qualifying runs, as most of the front runners showed early speed. Ashton Lewis Jr., who starts 7th, was one of the few who broke into the top ten after practicing 16th fastest. Dave Blaney, on the other hand, slipped from 10th in practice, and, with a lap 3-tenths slower, will start 29th.

Kyle Busch backed up his qualifying effort by posting the fastest time in this evening's "Happy Hour" practice session. Close on his heals were Greg Biffle, Jason Leffler and NASCAR Busch Series point leader Martin Truex, Jr.

Robby Gordon flew in from Indianapolis this morning to put his Fruit of the Loom Chevrolet in the 10th starting position. NASCAR Busch Series points leader Martin Truex, Jr. will start from the inside of row nine.

The excitement continues at "the Action Track" on Friday, as the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series takes to the track for practice and Wawa Pole Qualifying for Saturday's Chevy American Revolution 400. Kyle Busch will lead the field to the green flag for the FUNAI 250 NASCAR Busch Series race "under the lights" at 8:00 p.m.
