Bowyer Best At Talladega

TALLADEGA, Ala. - After taking only 12 laps on Talladega Superspeedway during his short career, Clint Bowyer was good enough to take the pole for Saturday's Aaron's 312.

The Emporia, Kan., native, driving for Richard Childress Racing, ran a fast lap of 184.253 mph to take the top spot. It is his first career NASCAR Busch Series pole.

"On my end of it, it's pretty cool to only have 12 laps under your belt here and run so good," Bowyer said. "That just shows you what superspeedway program Richard Childress has. I'd like to thank our fabrication shop and our engine shop; this is their day to shine at these superspeedways and shine they did today."

Bowyer is filling in for a limited schedule in the No. 21 Reese's Chevrolet usually driven by Kevin Harvick. Bowyer's other RCR teammate Ron Hornaday Jr. will start his No. 2 ACDelco Chevrolet on the outside pole. He ran 183.737 mph. "Bridesmaid again," Hornaday said. "Last time, Daytona to (Martin Truex Jr.). And now to my own teammate - that's the only plus about it. RCR really works hard on the program with plate motors and everything."

Martin Truex Jr. will start third. Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s Chance 2 Motorsports teammate and protege ran a 183.522 mph.

Truex has an impressive resume this season. He won the Busch Series event at Bristol in March and has two poles - one at Daytona, the other at Nashville.

"I've got probably one of the best cars out there, no doubt, and the best teammate to draft with," Truex said. "(Earnhardt Jr.) only qualified 10th so I'm going to bust on him a little bit about that tonight. As soon as that green flag drops, he'll be the first one to come to the front. Hopefully we can hook up and race together all day and be better at the end of the race and race for the win."

Earnhardt Jr. won the season-opening Busch Series race at Daytona International Speedway, and has a long, successful history at the 2.66-mile Talladega Superspeedway.

"Hopefully when it comes down, me and Martin keep joking, when it comes down to the last lap they get behind the right car," Earnhardt Jr. said.
