Biffle Spins Bodine Wins

The finish was worth the wait.

Todd Bodine and Greg Biffle battled to the checkered flag Sunday at Kentucky Speedway, with Bodine surviving a spin by Biffle on the final lap to win the rain-delayed Kroger 300.

The victory was the first for Bodine in the Busch Series since March 2001.

Biffle spun heading to the finish line but still finished second. Tony Raines was third, with pole winner Scott Riggs, who led 91 laps, finishing fourth and Scott Wimmer finishing fifth.

Jamie McMurray was sixth, followed by Kerry Earnhardt, Ricky Hendrick, Kenny Wallace and Shane Hall.

With six laps to go, Hermie Sadler blew an engine, and NASCAR decided to display the red flag. That set up a three-lap shootout.

Bodine led at the green flag, but Biffle had a better restart and jumped into the lead.

"My car wasn’t that good at the restart, and Greg knew that and took advantage of it," Bodine said. "I just said, ‘To hell with that. He’s not going to do that to me.’"

Bodine ran Biffle down, and made his move on the final lap.

“I never thought Bodine would catch me with the kind of lead I had taking the white flag, but his car was just awesome up top,” Biffle said. “My car wouldn’t work at all up top. That’s where he gained all that ground on me. I didn’t want to lift because I’d have given it away. I tried to keep after it, but I pushed up, squeezed him bad. I think he may have turned back down a little bit, too, to push me down.

“It was an exciting finish for everybody, including the guys behind us. We were fighting for a win. The checkers were in the air. That’s what we get paid to do.”

The two hard-chargers charged hard around the 1.5-mile tri-oval on the last lap, banging fenders as they fought for the victory.

“To be honest ... I didn’t think I was gonna be able to get back by him,” Bodine said. “Greg’s way too good a competitor with way too good a great car.

“But on my side, at that point, I had a better car. I didn’t know if I’d get him or not, but I had nothing to lose. I’m a racer. Finishing second - you might as well finish last.”

Heading to the checkered flag, Biffle’s rear end got loose and he spun out.

“I pushed up into Todd coming off the corner,” Biffle said. “He probably saw me coming up, so he tried to push me down. That got me sideways and I was trying to correct it, and I didn’t want to wreck us both. Versus taking us both out, I just went ahead and spun down towards the grass.”

The race was postponed from Saturday night after a long rain delay. Bodine was supposed to race in Sunday’s Winston Cup event at Michigan International Speedway, but his contract with Herzog Jackson Motorsports dictates that his priority is the Busch car. Bodine’s sub in the Winston Cup car was his older brother, Geoffrey.

“It’s understood that in any scheduling conflicts, I’m committed to the No. 92 Excedrin Chevrolet,” Bodine said. “And it’s not like I was leaving my Cup car to some rookie that didn’t know what he was doing. My wife talked to (Geoffrey) last night during the rain delay, and he said he was up there doing the rain dance.”

The next Busch Series race is the GNC/Live Well 250 at The Milwaukee Mile in June 30.
