Biffle Brews Up Milwaukee Pole

WEST ALLIS, Wis. – Greg Biffle grew up a long way from The Milwaukee Mile, but the way he drivers there, it’s like a second home.

Saturday, Biffle continued his success in Milwaukee, winning the pole for Sunday’s GNC Live Well 250 NASCAR Busch Series race. Biffle, who was born in Vancouver, Wash., turned a lap of 121.770 mph in the No. 60 Roush Racing Ford to claim his second pole of the season.

Biffle edged Jason Keller, who went 121.544 mph in the No. 57 ppc Racing Ford.

“There seems to be quite a bit less grip when you want to put the power down,” Biffle said. “I was a little frustrated when we started doing practice qualifying runs because last year we did a 29.32 in practice and actually qualified at a 42. I was a little concerned when the fastest we went was a 70 and we started looking and everybody was doing 60s and 70s. The track has just slowed up a little bit, but there’s such a fine line there because this track is so technical.

“Between my qualifying time and Jason’s, it’s just a fraction of putting the throttle down or letting up on the gas or stepping on the brakes. We were really lucky to get that lap in. We’re pretty close to the same we were last year. We’re using some different front springs or front suspension geometry, so we’ve got some different springs in it. But, we’re pretty close.”

Tim Sauter qualified third, followed by Todd Bodine, Jay Sauter, Scott Riggs, Tony Raines, Ashton Lewis, Johnny Sauter and Jim Sauter.

No, that’s not a typo: all four of the Sauter family drivers qualified in the Top 10. Father Jim is making an appearance in a Richard Childress Racing Chevy, joining sons Jay, Tim and Johnny on their home track. It also marks the first time in NASCAR history a father will race against three sons.

Biffle continued his hot streak of late. Both of his poles this season have come in the last three races, and he’s got one victory – at Dover – two second-place and one third-place finish in his last four races.

Biffle has moved back into the Busch Series championship hunt, trailing leader Jack Sprague by 110. Riggs is second, 68 out of the lead. Sprague qualified 18th Saturday.

Biffle became the first Busch Series rookie to win at Milwaukee when he went to victory lane last year. But if you’re looking for a repeat, history isn’t on your side. No driver has repeated at The Milwaukee Mile, and no driver even has two victories. All 11 races have had different winners.

“I think we’ve got a good chance,” Biffle said. “Certainly, we think we have a car that we can win with this weekend if we can just tune on it during Happy Hour. I think we can be there with at least a top-five finish and maybe even the win. We’re really focusing on getting back in the points battle, and right now, we’re doing what we need to do to make that happen.”

The GNC Live Well 250 will get the green flag Sunday at 2:30 p.m. (ET).
