KANSAS CITY, Kan. - Kyle Busch inherited the lead late after leader Ben Rhodes suffered a mechanical failure and then held on to pick up the win in Friday’s NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Toyota Tundra 250 at Kansas Speedway.

It’s his first win of the season in the Camping World Truck Series for Busch and the 47th of his career.

“Really great race. I feel horrible for Ben Rhodes. He drove a great race there,” Busch said. “Great run overall. Really proud of the effort of our guys.”

Busch started 10th and through the help of several early cautions quickly worked his way to the front of the field, taking the lead for the first time of the night on Lap 23. Busch held on to win Stage 1 and also took Stage 2 before falling back to second behind Rhodes late in the race.

Rhodes and Busch traded the lead multiple times as the race approached the 100-lap mark, and again after a round of caution flag pitstops, but it was Rhodes who would pull out to a large lead with under 20 laps to go.

“We had a battle there with Ben and it could have went either way with lap traffic there a couple times and then he got far enough away that it just seemed that I couldn’t overcome the draft so I couldn’t catch up to him there,” Busch said.

Rhodes faltered with seven laps to go giving the lead back to Busch, who was able to cruise to a 2.6 second victory.

Busch was complementary of the young Rhodes, who was driving a chassis built by Busch’s team.

“He did a phenomenal job. It’s a tough one to lose that way, I know because I’ve lost them that way as well,” Busch said. “But for him to be racing against us and to be doing an awesome job, man he raced me clean. He did a great job."

Behind Busch was defending Camping World Truck Series champion Johnny Sauter in second and John Hunter Nemechek in third.

“I felt like traffic was really, really tough to manage,” Sauter said. “Even if I caught a lap truck it was hard to keep up and keep momentum going. We started the race really good and I called for an adjustment to free it up.

"Second’s good. I’m happy. Everyone at GMS is doing a great job. I just felt coming into the race we were going to be better than that. All in all a great night. The truck’s in one piece and we’ll go to Charlotte.”

“Started out pretty good,” Nemechek said. “We fought really tight all night center off. Lot of wheel in it and just couldn’t get back in the gas.

“We have a good notebook to go back on but after the last couple races we’ve had to come back after two mechanical failures and to come back and get a third is definitely great for our team. Hopefully we can keep that momentum going.”

Sauter maintains a two-point lead over Christopher Bell with Matt Crafton in third, 44 points out of the lead.

Friday’s race was slowed 11 times for 46 laps.

The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series will head to another 1.5 mile track next Friday night as they kickoff All-Star Weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
