'Rowdy' On the Rampage in Truck Series

There are 34 drivers entered in Friday’s Lucas Oil 200 Camping World Truck Series race at Dover International Speedway.  The challenge for 33 of them is figuring out a way to beat Kyle Busch.

He’s won three of the season’s first four races and could very well be four-for-four.  Busch didn’t enter the March 30th event at Martinsville Speedway.  He’s stormed through the early portion of the 2014 schedule like "Godzilla" crushing skyscrapers and "The Monster Mile" may be no match for the No. 51 Toyota this weekend.

"We’ve had fast trucks and our over-the-wall guys have made great pit stops," said Busch, a three-time Dover winner in the Truck Series.  "Everything seems to be clicking for us right now."

That’s an understatement.

He made a last-lap pass of Timothy Peters to win the season opener at Daytona International Speedway.  On May 9 at Kansas Speedway, Busch started from the pole and led a race-high 104 laps en route to victory.  That was the 29th win for crew chief Eric Phillips, a Truck Series record.

Two weeks ago in Charlotte, "Rowdy" led all but four of the 134 laps in crushing the field yet again.  Busch has now won his last four Truck Series starts dating back to last season’s finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

"A lot of hard work over the off-season, from everyone involved, has gone into this," Phillips said of Kyle Busch Motorsports’ quick start to the 2014 campaign.  "We’ve got a great group of guys assembled.  We unload every week with a lot of speed and it makes my job easy, just to make small tweaks during practice."

Race day hasn’t been the only time for Busch to shine.  Qualifying has been special, too.  He’s set track records at Kansas and Charlotte in winning the pole for those two events.  His next target is the one-mile concrete oval in Delaware’s capital city.

"I’ve been very successful in all three series at Dover," Busch said.

That’s an understatement.

He has eight wins there … two in the Sprint Cup Series, three in Nationwide and three more in the Camping World Truck Series.  In winning last year’s Lucas Oil 200, Busch led the final 32 laps in beating Matt Crafton to the checkered flag by 1.5 seconds.  He’s got his sights set on a weekend sweep at Dover.

"This is one I look at as a possible triple-win weekend," Busch said.  "The concrete surface is very slick and some drivers don’t like the feel of it.  I enjoy going to Dover and Bristol.  They’re fun places to race because they’re challenging and other drivers don’t necessarily get it."

Busch continued: “Having the right mindset going into those races can give you an advantage over the guys that aren’t looking forward to racing there."

That’s an understatement.
