Still Work Ahead for Crafton

Matt Crafton still has much to race for in Friday night’s season-ending NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Ford Eco-Boost 200 at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Crafton simply needs to start the race to lock up his first career series championship. But the veteran driver isn’t looking at things quite that simply come Friday.

“There’s still work to be done,” Crafton said on SIRIUS/XM NASCAR Radio. “We want to win the owners’ title as well for ThorSport and of course end the season with a trip to Victory Lane as well.”

While Crafton’s 46-point lead over Ty Dillon in the driver’s championship is insurmountable, the challenge of winner the owner’s title is a bit more challenging.

The No. 88 ThorSport Racing Toyota currently leads the No. 51 Kyle Busch Motorsports Toyota by 23 points in the owners’ standings. To clinch the championship, regardless of any other truck’s finish, the No. 88 must finish 18th or better; or 19th or better with at least one lap led; or 20th or better with the most laps led.

“(Team owners) Duke and Rhonda Thorson have worked so hard to make this team what it is today we want to do everything we can to bring home both championships to ThorSport this year,” Crafton said.

Crafton came up just short of clinching the title last week in Phoenix despite his fifth place finish and series-best 19th top 10 performance in the season’s first 21 races. But he was more than pleased with solidifying his position to lock up the championship this weekend in south Florida.

"It's going to feel damn good to go to Homestead and forget about everything and race like hell," Crafton said after the PIR effort.

"It's beyond gratifying to win this championship, especially for Duke and Rhonda and ThorSport -- and for Menards -- who have all meant so much to my career. But our work's not finished. We have one more battle on our hands and I'm confident, with what my team's accomplished already this season, we'll be equal to the challenge at Homestead."

After being involved in a title race as well as dealing with the addition of a new baby to his family, Crafton’s looking forward to finally getting some peace once the championship celebration ends Friday night.

"Just being able to sleep, that's the coolest thing," Crafton said. "I'm not going to lie, for the last month-and-a-half, it's been tough."
