KBM Takes To The Track

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Kyle Busch Motorsports made its NASCAR Camping World Truck Series debut on Wednesday as the two-truck team began gearing up for the 2010 season and the NextEra 250 at Daytona International Speedway.

For Busch, it was also his debut as an owner/driver in the series in which he has driven to Victory Lane 16 times in 69 career starts. This weekend will mark his third career start at Daytona where he's finished second in each of his previous attempts.

In today's first practice session behind the wheel of the No. 18 Toyota, Busch was second fastest with a lap of 185.219 mph.

"This is fun," Busch said. "This was a real good feeling driving my own stuff."

After Miccosukee Resort opted to pull out of sponsoring Busch's truck, the team landed Heluva Good! as a sponsor for Daytona.

“You only get one first race. We plan on having Kyle Busch Motorsports involved in NASCAR for a long time and, no matter what we do, Heluva Good! will always be the sponsor on our truck for the first race," Busch said. "Obviously, it’s huge for them to come on board for Daytona, and we’re going to do all we can to put them in victory lane."

Although he will not be driving at Daytona, Brian Ickler will team with Busch in the No. 18 this season with Ickler running the non-NASCAR Sprint Cup Series/Truck Series companion events.

"I’m excited about being in good equipment and having great support from Kyle and being able to learn more throughout the year from him," Ickler said. "Everybody in Nationwide, Sprint Cup, everyone really is trying to beat Kyle Busch right now. He’s on top of his game, and having him as an ally and having him tell you everything that he does when he gets to a race track, I think, is a huge advantage."

KBM's second truck, the No. 56, will be driven full-time by Tayler Malsam.

Malsam, who finished 10th last year at Daytona in the No. 81 truck owned by Randy Moss, was 18th fastest in this evening's practice session with a lap of 183.576 mph.

This year Malsam is going through the same steps as 2009 as he enters his second season with a new team.

"It's been pretty crazy," Malsam said about the team coming together in the offseason. "I kind of went through the same thing last year at Randy Moss Motorsports, starting a team late. They did a heck of a job there, and Kyle is doing an amazing job here, too, of getting all our people in position and getting our trucks built. It's definitely a first-class operation."

Director of competition Rick Ren and crew chiefs Eric Phillips (No. 18) and Dan Stillman (No. 56) will lead KBM in 2010.

Todd Bodine led the evening's practice session with a speed of 186.212 mph. He ran 25 laps during the practice. Rick Crawford, Aric Almirola and Max Papis rounded out the top five.

The Trucks will get one more practice session on Thursday morning before qualifying later that evening.
