In July 1983, Dale Earnhardt claimed his second victory of the season – doing so with a big assist from Bobby Allison.

After pursuing race leader Darrell Waltrip in the closing laps of the Talladega 500, Earnhardt pulled out to pass and when he did, Allison tucked in behind the No. 15 Bud Moore-owned Ford and pushed Earnhardt to the win despite being a lap down.

The race featured 46 lead changes and the final 320 miles were run caution-free.

"I was as tense and as excited as I’ve ever been in those last laps," said Earnhardt, who beat runner-up Waltrip to the checkered flag by just four car lengths. "I knew exactly what I had to do."

And Waltrip knew exactly what happened on the final lap of the race.

"No question about it," he said. "Bobby won the race for Dale. I never thought he would get in the way like that."

Tim Richmond took third place with Richard Petty and Harry Gant completing the top five. Pole sitter Cale Yarborough lost an engine and finished 24th in the 40-car field.
