On Oct. 5, 1975, Richard Petty dominated the second half of the National 500 in Charlotte – leading the final 111 laps to notch his 12th win of the season.

Petty’s margin of victory was .26 seconds over a fast-closing David Pearson with Buddy Baker, Benny Parsons and Cecil Gordon completing the top five.

It was Petty’s fourth win in a six-race stretch as he marched toward the sixth of his record seven Cup Series championships. The following weekend at Richmond International Raceway, he would clinch the 1975 crown – with four races still to be run!

Petty ended the season with a 722-point lead over championship runner-up Dave Marcis. Richard Childress, who is currently a NASCAR team owner, finished fifth in the final standings.

The Sprint Cup Series returns to Charlotte Motor Speedway this week for Saturday night’s Bank of America 500, the fourth race of this year’s post-season Chase.
