Rahal Letterman Out Of IRL

The economy has sidelined plans for Rahal-Letterman Racing to compete on the 2009 Indy Racing League schedule leaving driver Ryan Hunter-Reay looking for a new ride as the season draws near.

The Columbus, Ohio suburb-based team won the Indy 500 in 2004 with Buddy Rice behind-the-wheel and also brought Danica Patrick to American open wheel racing's top series.

"At this time Rahal Letterman will not be in the IRL in 2009," team co-owner Bobby Rahal told The Associated Press in an e-mail Thursday.

Hunter-Reay won a race for the team last season at Watkins Glen.

Although the team doesn't plan on competing in the IRL unless sponsorship can be found, it will continue its ALMS program through its alliance with BMW.

RLR is co-owned by talk-show host David Letterman.
