Power Hits The Gold Coast

Will Power, Team Australia IndyCar star and local favorite, has headed home to the Gold Coast for his home event, the Nikon Indy 300, at The Streets of Surfers Paradise October 23-26 in sun-loving Queensland, Australia.

All year, Power has hung out to get back to one of the most famous coastlines in the world - the beaches of the Gold Coast. Not just because he loves the beach, but also because it is home to his first CART series pole award. He's won the pole at Surfers Paradise in the Aussie Vineyards/Team Australia car for the past two years.

"This is definitely one of my very favorite places in the world," Power said.

"I love the beach and the surf, but I don't get much of a chance to do anything like this in the U.S., so it's usually the first thing I do each time I come home.

"It's very unique having the beach and the waves right up against the skyscrapers and the city.

"When the Nikon Indy 300 comes around, we even have a world-class race track right beside the beach. It's all pretty cool."

The beach may be one of the main reasons Power loves racing at Surfers Paradise, but it's not the only reason. Power's focused and determined drive leads him back home as well.

He loves to return to his hometown of Toowoomba in Queensland to catch up on things with his personal fitness trainer, Troy Morgan.

Despite his racing in the U.S., Power has kept Morgan as his personal trainer for the last three seasons.

"Each year I always look forward to getting back home to Toowoomba and one of the main reasons is training with Troy," Power said.

"He has helped me raise things to the next level in terms of my fitness and physical condition."

Power is based in Indianapolis, Indiana throughout the season, a land-locked city in the Midwest where the vast majority of the IndyCar Series drivers and teams are based.

Upon his arrival, he ensured that his first port of call was the beach, and this year, Power was in for a big surprise.

The Southport Surf Life Club acknowledged Power as an honorary member of their club because of his love for all things beach related.

"When we heard that Will loves the surf we thought it would be great that he be a member of our surf club," Southport Surf Club General Manager, Steve Condrom said.

"With all of his racing commitments with Team Australia in the United States, I know that Will doesn't get much of a chance to enjoy the beach. But, when he is here, we're keen to make sure he gets down to the beach as much as possible."

The race will air at 10:30 p.m. (ET) October 25 on ESPN Classic and will be re-aired on ESPN2 on October 26 at 11 p.m. The race will air live on the IMS Radio Network.
