Andrettis Lead Opening Indy Practice

Practice for the 90th Indianapolis 500 opened Sunday with Rookie Orientation Practice, with a pair of Andrettis leading the six drivers practicing at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Michael Andretti quickly shook off three years of rust, running 51 laps on the 2.5-mile oval. His best lap in the No. 1 Vonage Honda Dallara was 40.8009, 220.999 mph. Andretti’s last race was the 2003 Indy 500.

Second on the charts was Marco Andretti, who officially passed his rookie test in the No. 26 NYSE Honda. He ran 85 laps, with his best speed 220.572 mph.

Two-time Indy 500 winner Al Unser Jr. also ran eight refresher laps, with a best speed of 206.387 mph.

Also passing his rookie test was P.J. Chesson, running a lap of 214.302 mph in the No. 91 Hemelgarn Carmelo Honda.

Arie Luyendyk Jr. had a best lap of 206.468 mph.

Also testing was Townsend Bell, with a speed of 113.066 mph his best of two laps.

Track activity resumes at noon Monday with the second day of the Rookie Orientation Program.
