Entries Flood In At Deadline

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Thirteen entries, including those from past IndyCar Series champions Andretti Green Racing, Target Chip Ganassi Racing and A.J. Foyt Enterprises, were filed April 6 for the 89th Indianapolis 500. Other teams filing entries were PDM Racing, NUM Racing and Roth Racing.

The 89th Indianapolis 500 is scheduled for May 29 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. April 6 was the deadline day for entries, which had to be postmarked by midnight. Additional entries are expected to arrive at Indy Racing League headquarters in the next week.

Defending IndyCar Series champion Andretti Green Racing filed four entries for its quartet of drivers, Bryan Herta, Tony Kanaan, Dan Wheldon and Dario Franchitti. Herta will drive the No. 7 XM Satellite Radio Dallara-Honda, with a backup entered. Jeff Grahn is the chef mechanic.

Herta will attempt to make his fourth career Indianapolis 500 start. He finished a career best fourth last year with Andretti Green, co-owned by former Indianapolis 500 standout Michael Andretti.

2004 series champion Kanaan will drive the No. 11 Team 7-Eleven Dallard-Honda, with a backup entered. Jeff Simon is the chief mechanic.

Kanaan has been one of the most consistent starters and finishers this decade in his three previous Indy starts. He has qualified in the top five each of the last three years, with a best start of second in 2003. He finished third in 2003 and second last year.

Current series points leader Wheldon will attempt to make his third career Indianapolis 500 start in the No. 27 Klein Tools Jim Beam Dallara-Honda, with a backup entered. Mike Howath is the chief mechanic.

Wheldon, who has won this season at Homestead-Miami and Phoenix, started second and finished third last year at Indy, both career bests at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Franchitti also will try to make his third career start at Indianapolis in the No. 27 Arca Ex Dallara-Honda, with a backup entered. Dave Popielarz is the chief mechanic. Franchitti qualified third and finished 14th last year at Indy, both career bests.

Target Chip Ganassi Racing, which won the 2000 Indianapolis 500 with Juan Pablo Montoya and the 2003 IndyCar Series championship with Scott Dixon, filed entries for its three regular IndyCar Series competitors, Dixon, Darren Manning and Ryan Briscoe.

Dixon will drive the No. 9 Target Chip Ganassi Racing Toyota Panoz-Toyota, with a backup entered. Sean Hanrahan is the chief mechanic. IndyCar Series champion Dixon will try to improve upon his career-best eighth place finish in 2004 this year at Indianapolis in his third “500” start.

Manning will attempt to make his second Indianapolis 500 start in the No. 10 Target Chip Ganassi Racing Toyota Panoz-Toyota, with a backup entered. Dave Higuera is the chief mechanic. Manning started 15th and placed 25th last year as a rookie at Indianapolis.

Rookie Briscoe will drive the No. 33 Target Chip Ganassi Racing Toyota Panoz-Toyota entry, with a backup entered. Ricky Davis is the chief mechanic.

A.J. Foyt Enterprises, which won the 1999 Indianapolis 500 and 1998 IndyCar Series title with Kenny Brack, filed entries for A.J. Foyt IV, Larry Foyt and Scott Mayer. Foyt IV is the grandson of team owner and four-time Indianapolis 500 winner A.J. Foyt. Larry Foyt is A.J. Foyt’s son.

Foyt IV will drive the No. 14 A.J. Foyt Racing Dallara-Toyota, with a backup entered. Bill Spencer is the chief mechanic. 2002 Menards Infiniti Pro Series champion Foyt IV has a career-best finish of 18th in his two Indianapolis 500 starts.

Larry Foyt will try to make his second Indianapolis 500 start in the No. 48 A.J. Foyt Racing Panoz-Toyota, with a backup entered. Craig Baranouski is the chief mechanic. Larry Foyt started 22nd and finished 32nd as an Indianapolis 500 rookie in 2004.

IndyCar Series and Infiniti Pro Series veteran Mayer, will attempt to make his first career Indianapolis 500 start in the No. 41 ABC Supply Co. Inc Dallara-Toyota, with a backup entered. The chief mechanic will be announced later.

Team owner Marty Roth will drive the No. 25 Roth Racing Dallara, with an engine to be named. No backup was entered. Rick Duman is the chief mechanic. Menards Infiniti Pro Series veteran Roth started 32nd and placed 24th as an Indy rookie last year.

PDM Racing filed an entry for the No. 18 entry with a Chevrolet engine. The driver, chassis for the primary and backup car, and the engine for the backup car will be announced later. The chief mechanic will be announced later for PDM, which is one of the original IndyCar Series teams.

Mo Nunn Fernandez Racing filed the No. 5 Investment Properties of America Panoz-Honda for driver Adrian Fernandez in an owner-driver pairing that was announced earlier. A backup car also was entered. Jim Broyles is the chief mechanic. Fernandez will attempt to make his fourth career Indianapolis 500 start. He started sixth and finished seventh last year, leading three laps, all Indy career bests.

New IndyCar Series team Vision Racing filed two entries April 7, as veteran Jeff Ward will join the team’s regular driver, Ed Carpenter. The addition of a second car for 1997 Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year Ward will see Vision put three cars on track at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Ward will attempt to make his seventh career Indy start in the No. 22 Vision Racing LLC Dallara-Toyota, with a backup entered.

Ward has recorded four top-10 finishes at Indianapolis, with a career best of second behind Kenny Brack in 1999. Ward finished third as a rookie in 1997 and fourth in 2000. His last start at Indianapolis came in 2002, after being a regular competitor in the IndyCar Series from 1997-2002.

Carpenter, from Indianapolis, will attempt to make his second career Indianapolis 500 start in the No. 20 Vision Racing LLC Dallara-Toyota, with a backup entered. Inaugural Futaba Freedom 100 winner Carpenter, a former USAC short-track standout, started 16th and placed 31st as a rookie last year in the Indianapolis 500.
