Rain Gives Kanaan Pikes Peak Pole

FOUNTAIN, Colo. – Indy Racing League IndyCar Series points leader Tony Kanaan will start Sunday’s Pikes Peak Honda Indy 225 from the front of a 22-car starting field set by practice times after a late-afternoon shower washed out Saturday’s qualifying at Pikes Peak International Raceway.

“We concentrated a lot on race trim this morning," said Kanaan. "This afternoon, we divided the team a little bit, so I was trying to get a good qualifying car. We have four cars in the top six, but it's a shame we didn't get to qualify because I think it could be one, two, three, four. I was really hoping to get that. It's a nice feeling to be on the pole again."

It is Kanaan’s second IndyCar pole of the season, and his second here at Pikes Peak. He started from the front in 2003 when the field again was set by practice times due to rain. It is the fourth consecutive race that Kanaan will start from the front row. The Andretti Green Racing driver currently holds a 50-poin lead in the standings over fellow Honda driver Buddy Rice of Rahal Letterman Racing.

Dan Wheldon, Vitor Meira and Dario Franchitti make it a first-through-fourth sweep for Honda of the first two starting rows for Sunday’s 225-lap event.

Sunday's Honda Indy 225 will take the green flag at 3:30 p.m. ET.
