Gordon's car got loose in Turn 1, slid through the short chute and made contact with the wall. He had just turned sixth-fastest speed at 218.446 mph.
"I went down into Turn 1, the car compressed in the corner and the rear got a little bit sideways," said Gordon, who was checked in the infield medical center and cleared to drive. "I tried to save it and it hooked back the other way and spun around.
"The SAFER Barrier definitely reduced the damage to the car, I think we can get this car back on the track and use it for qualifying. I think the SAFER Barrier is tremendous and I think every racetrack in the world should look at what they are doing here at Indianapolis."
