Kanaan Still Pole Perfect

AVONDALE, Ariz. - Two races, two poles this season for Tony Kanaan.

Kanaan earned his second MBNA Pole in as many IRL IndyCarTM Series starts this season, claiming the top spot for the Purex Dial Indy 200 this afternoon at Phoenix International Raceway. His top lap was 20.1667 seconds, 178.512 mph in the No. 11 Team 7-Eleven Dallara.

2001 Bombardier Rookie of the Year Felipe Giaffone will share the front row with Kanaan, qualifying second at 20.2513, 177.766 in the No. 21 Hollywood Mo Nunn Racing Panoz G Force. Series points leader Scott Dixon qualified third at 20.2633, 177.661 in the No. 9 Target Chip Ganassi Racing Panoz G Force, while defending event champion Helio Castroneves was fourth at 20.3359, 177.027 in the No. 3 Marlboro Team Penske Dallara.

"It feels good, for sure," Kanaan said in the post qualifying press conference. "If you guys look back to Miami, it was good to be on the pole. Again, it's a great teamwork. I need to thank Michael (Andretti) and Dario (Franchitti) again. It looks like I'm repeating everything that I said in Miami, but again, we work hard together. We came up to a good setup. I was lucky to pull out a number behind my two teammates, so I got feedback from them about how the track condition was today. I improved my car a little bit, added a little bit of front wing. My car was just perfect. I never thought I would say that, but the lap was flat out. I don't know how could I have gone any quicker. It was just awesome. Days like today, a lap like I did today, I'm going to keep in my mind for a long time because it was a good lap. We want to do one, two, three, but we'll get there one day."

Sunday's Dial Purex Indy 200 takes the green flag at 3:30 p.m. (ET).
