Bud Backing Andretti At Indy
March 20, 2002 | 12:00 A.M. EST
“We are excited to have Budweiser as an associate sponsor for the Motorola/Archipelago entry and driver Michael Andretti,” said Kim Green, general manager of Team Motorola/Archipelago. “Budweiser has a great history in motorsports and we’re looking forward to partnering with them for the 86th running of the Indy 500.”
The Anheuser-Busch associate sponsorship means that Andretti’s car, firesuit, helmet, crew uniforms, in-car cameras, and garage and pit equipment will sport the Budweiser logo. Andretti will also be featured on Indiana billboards and promotional materials in beverage stores.
“Budweiser has a long, rich tradition in open-wheel racing, including two Indy 500 victories, and we’re excited about the opportunity to team up with Michael Andretti,” said Tony Ponturo, vice president of Global Media and Sports Marketing for Anheuser-Busch. “He is one of the top open-wheel racers in the world, and we look forward to continuing our winning history with the Andretti family.”
Budweiser sponsored Michael’s father, Mario Andretti, in his 1984 championship-winning season in CART.
Budweiser will also provide something for the fans. Individuals 21 years of age and older will have the opportunity to play a Budweiser open-wheel racing simulation game in Indianapolis prior to the Indy 500 for the chance to win, among other prizes, the opportunity to race Andretti in the game or to serve as an honorary pit crew member on race day.
Andretti has seven top-10 finishes in 12 career starts in the Indy 500, with a career-best second coming in 1991, the same year he won the CART Championship. He finished third at Indy in 2001, which marked a return for Andretti to the historic race after a five-year absence.
Andretti will have the assistance of team manager Tony Cotman and crew chief John Cummiskey in his attempt to qualify for the Memorial Day-weekend race.
Indy 500 qualifying begins on May 11 and continues May 12, with the final day of qualifying – Bump Day – set for May 19.
