IRL Broadcasts Turn The Page

Jason Priestley is gone, so is Larry Rice, but Indy Racing League broadcasts will sport familiar names and voices nonetheless when ABC begins its coverage of the 15-race season on March 2.

Veterans Paul Page and Gary Gerould have been added to the crew, as has former IRL driver Scott Goodyear.

Page and Gerould are best known for their work during CART broadcasts during the 1980s and 1990s.

“Paul adds years of experience to the team, while Scott will provide us with a very unique perspective as a former IRL driver,” said Howard Katz, president of ABC Sports. “Along with top pit reporters Jack Arute, Gary Gerould and Vince Welch, we have assembled one of the most talented and experienced broadcast teams in the industry.”

Last year’s crew of Bob Jenkins, Priestley and Rice was broken up, in part, because of CART’s departure from ABC/ESPN.

Jenkins is the only one who remains, and he was promoted to host of the coverage.

“I am very pleased to promote Bob (Jenkins) to the host position because he is the pre-eminent voice in auto racing,” Katz said.

Page will be the play-by-play announcer, with Goodyear offering race analysis and Gerould joining Arute and Welch as pit reporters.

ABC will broadcast 10 IRL events this season, beginning with the Grand Prix of Miami at 1 p.m. March 2 at Homestead-Miami Speedway. The cornerstone of the coverage is the Indianapolis 500, which will air from noon to 4 p.m. (ET) May 26.
