Robbie Buhl topped a fast and close practice session at Nashville Superspeedway on Thursday night, turning in a lap of 199.933 mph at the 1.33-mile track.

His strong showing in the No. 24 G Force-Infiniti was somewhat of a surprise, considering he was 11th fastest after the first practice session Thursday evening.

“We just improved on a couple of things today in terms of aerodynamic packages in the car,” Buhl said. “We're really focusing on our tire wear now. It's a race of surface, and we need our tires to last. If we only go 30 laps on a set of tires, we're cooked.

“We knew we had a good balance in the car, and we went with fresher tires, and this is what we get. It's rewarding.”

Buhl is in search of his first victory of the year and first since January of 2000, when he won at Walt Disney World Speedway.

"I am happy with the car, and the Infiniti power is excellent," Buhl said. "We just have to keep working for that victory. You would never know that this team is capable of winning if you just look at our black-and-white results. We have the right package, we just have to get it done."

Indy Racing Northern Light Series points leader Sam Hornish Jr. was second fastest at 199.832 mph in the No. 4 Dallara-Aurora. Billy Boat at 199.622 mph in the No. 98 Dallara-Aurora, Buddy Lazier at 199.391 mph in the No. 91 Dallara-Aurora and Greg Ray at 199.337 in the No. 2 Dallara-Aurora rounded out the Top 5.

Hornish wasn’t exactly pleased with his practice.

“We’re not quite as fast as we’d like to be right now, but we’ll keep working on it,” he said. “We’re, actually, running a little bit faster than we did in testing here.”

Eddie Cheever Jr., who is coming off a victory on July 8 at Kansas City, struggled in practice. He was 11th fastest in final practice.

“Nashville is a very difficult track, and the field is very tight,” said Cheever, who owns and drivers the No. 51 Dallara-Infiniti. “We figured something out towards the end of the session that should help us.”

Qualifying for the Harrah’s Indy 200 is scheduled for 5:45 p.m. (ET) Friday. The race will start at 7 p.m. (ET) Saturday. It is sold out.
