Ganassi Rookies Get Indy Shot

INDIANAPOLIS - Now that Jimmy Vasser and Tony Stewart have put Chip Ganassi’s two primary cars safely in the field for the Indianapolis 500, the drivers they replaced will get their chance to qualify Sunday.

Rookies Bruno Junqueira and Nicolas Minassian, Ganassi’s regular CART drivers, will drive Vasser’s and Stewart’s backup cars in practice and qualifications on Sunday.

"Since we have two cars available, it will be great experience for the two rookies," Ganassi said. "Bruno and Nicolas are great drivers and now they get a chance to race at Indy.

"They’ve shown they can compete in the FedEx Series, and I want to give them this opportunity to qualify for the race. If nothing else, it will be invaluable experience for next year."

The drivers are understandably excited about their chance to qualify and compete at Indianapolis.

"The Indianapolis 500 is the biggest race in the world, and I am ready to go qualify," Minassian said.

"I can’t wait to get in the car tomorrow," Junqueira added. "This has always been a dream of mine, and I want to make the most of this opportunity."

They may be happy, but probably nervous, too. If they fail to qualify Sunday, the two will not get another chance to make the race because the CART FedEx Championship Series will be in Japan on the second weekend of qualifying.

Minassian understands the challenge.

"We will not have much practice time tomorrow, but I learned a lot here in testing," he said. "I’ll be ready to get in the car and try to make the field."

Day 2 of Indy 500 qualifying begins at noon ET on Sunday.
