Ray Sizzles At Hot-Lanta

Greg Ray continued his dominance at the Atlanta Motor Speedway on Friday, taking the pole for the zMAX 500 with a fast time of 218.265 mph.

"I'm very happy," Ray said. "We have good motors, good chassis and good setups. Everybody is hitting on all cylinders."

Ray’s best lap was also more than two miles-per-hour faster than second place Jeff Ward who recorded a speed of 216.144 mph.

Eddie Cheever Jr. qualified third at 215.776 mph while Mark Dismore was fourth at 215.061 mph. Shigeaki Hattori put in an impressive performance in qualifying, recording the fifth fastest time (213.870 mph).

Hattori's day was far from uneventful after he blew an engine in the final practice. He was originally scheduled to qualify fifth but was delayed as the crew made an engine change. Indy Racing League officials allowed Hattori his two laps of qualifying because the team immediately presented the car for qualifying after the engine change.

Sam Hornish Jr., who won the first two races of the Indy Racing Northern Light Series season, qualified sixth. Eliseo Salazar, Buzz Calkins, Buddy Lazier, and Robby McGehee rounded out the top ten.

Ray has been the man to beat so far in Atlanta, leading both practice sessions earlier today before qualifying. The defending sitter at the 1.5 mile track, Ray qualified more than two miles-per-hour faster than his time last year.

Among those who struggled in qualifying was the Galles team. Al Unser Jr., led the triumvirate, qualifying 14th quick while his teammates, Didier Andre and Casey Mears, qualified 20th and 27th. Sara Fisher, who finished second last race in Miami, qualified 18th.

The zMAX 500 is set to begin Saturday night at 7:00 pm ET.
