Schumacher Leads Silverstone Test

On a sunny and warm day in Silverstone, England, Panasonic Toyota Racing's Ralf Schumacher led the first day of testing with Vodafone McLaren Mercedes' Pedro de la Rosa finishing just behind.

Running a total of 71 laps around the 3.194-mile circuit, Schumacher set a fast lap of 1:22.794 to set the pace for the first of three days of testing at the Silverstone circuit.

"In general it was a successful day and we made it through everything that we had planned," said Schumacher. "We were concentrating on set-up work, primarily targeted at the British Grand Prix. We also looked at some different aero settings and did some qualifying runs. The conditions were very good, particularly in the morning, although the wind picked up in the afternoon."

McLaren test driver de la Rosa finished second quick, completing 98 laps with a best time of 1:22.915.

Red Bull Racing’s Mark Webber, ING Renault F1 Team’s Heikki Kovalainen and Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro tester Luca Badoer completed the top five in a session that saw 10 drivers set times for nine teams. Only Etihad Aldar Spyker Formula One Team had two drivers splitting driving duties on Tuesday as Giedo van der Garde and Adrian Valles used the new F8-VII/04 chassis for the first time.

AT&T Williams’ Kazuki Nakajima ran the most laps on the day, completing 124 circuits in his FW29.

One of the two teams absent from this week’s test, Super Aguri F1 Team, is conducting their own session at the Jerez circuit in Spain. Test driver James Rossiter completed 76 circuits in the SA07-05.

Teams and drivers will continue testing on Wednesday and Thursday at Silverstone.
