In just his first full year of Formula One racing, Hamilton has finished every race on the podium, with his worst finish of third coming in his debut at the Grand Prix of Australia.
The 22-year-old Hamilton previously raced in the GP2 Series Championship and has been involved with McLaren since 1998.
"What a dream, to come into two circuits i didn't know, to really come out with such pace," Hamilton said following the race. "I would've never thought in a million years I'd be sitting here next to these drivers having won both races in North America. It's very, very emotional."
The race saw the McLaren-Mercedes teammates joined by Ferrari's Felipe Massa on the podium.
Kimi Raikkonen claimed the fourth finishing spot. Renault scored four points with Heikki Kovalainen taking the fifth spot. Toyota's Jarno Trulli earned his best finish of the season in sixth.
In seventh, Mark Webber scored his first points of the season, driving for Red Bull. He's joined by rookie Sebastian Vettel in the positive points column, who finished eighth in his series debut, subbing for an injured Robert Kubica.
With the victory, Hamilton increased his points lead over Alonso to 10 points. Massa is 19 behind.
The Formula One World Series has a week off before it returns to racing in France on July 1.
