Less than three weeks after being named a test driver for Williams BMW, Antonio Pizzonia announced his arrival to Formula One with authority on Monday, leading the first day of testing for the 2002 season.

The Brazilian driver ran 66 laps on the Circuit de Catalunya outside Barcelona, running a top time of 1:20.033. McLaren driver Alexander Wurz was second fastest on the day, topping 1:20.088 on the day. At third fastest, David Coulthard was the highest finishing full time driver on the circuit. He circled the track 65 times with a top time of 1:20.566.

Pizzonia’s time was well below Michael Schumacher’s pole-winning run of 1:18.201 at the 2001 Grand Prix of Barcelona on the same track.

Though McLaren, BAR, and Jaguar were also present at the track for testing, only Williams pout three cars out on the track for the day. Ralf Schumacher and Marc Gene were fourth and fifth fastest in the new Williams BMW FW-24. This was the first test session for McLaren using Michelin tires, and all teams at the testing session except BAR use Michelins.

Eddie Irvine was sixth fastest, followed by BAR driver Anthony Davidson and Olivier Panis. Jaguar’s Pedro de la Rosa ran 33 laps Monday, running ninth fastest.

Though Panis and Davidson ran just 55 laps between them on Monday they got a good feel for the new BAR Honda 004 machine.

"I'm very happy with the work we've done here so far,” said Panis, who topped 1:21.914 in his 22 laps on track. “We didn't do very many laps but I've got a very good feeling about the car. Everyone back at the factory has worked really hard during the winter so I think we've made a good step forward and I'm positive for this year.

“At the moment I'm taking it step by step but today I felt very confident after just a few laps - as a driver that's important. I really enjoyed driving the car.”

Testing continues at Barcelona Tuesday and most teams will throughout the week.
