Ferrari Fellas Crash In Spain

Ferrari drivers Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello crashed in testing Wednesday, after putting in 70 laps between them at Circuit de Catalunya near Barcelona, Spain.

The two drivers were unhurt in the crash, but this marks the fourth time the Ferrari drivers have crashed in testing in the past six months. Schumacher also crashed while testing in Monza in July, and again in Mugello in August, while Barrichello crashed in Valencia, Spain, two weeks ago.

According to team officials, the crash ends Ferrari’s testing program that was to continue in Barcelona for the remainder of the week.

“Both F2001 cars suffered damage which could not be repaired at the track and the cars are being transported back to Maranello,” Ferrari said.

Before crashing, Schumacher had completed 17 laps with a best time of 1:18.52 and Barrichello had reeled off 39 laps with a best of 1:18.096.

Barrichello spun coming out of Turn 9, and a team spokesman said the crash is linked to driver error rather than a mechanical breakdown.

Schumacher crashed coming out of Turn 12 at the Barcelona track, but a spokesperson said the four-time World Champion is fine.

“He hit the tire barriers with the back end of the car,” the spokesperson said. “He's absolutely fine, but the car was quite badly damaged.”

Schumacher was reportedly seen signing autographs for fans later Wednesday.
