Coulthard Quickest In Austria

McLaren driver David Coulthard, who has finished second in the past three Austrian Grands Prix, led Thursday’s practice leading up to this weekend’s race, but it wasn’t without a little spice.

Ferrari driver Rubens Barrichello was fastest through much of practice, but with just minutes remaining, Coulthard came back out on the track and topped the Brazilian’s time.

After the initial run-through, Coulthard was pleased with his car in Austria.

"We made progress through the day on a track, which is still quite dusty and slippery," Coulthard said. "We haven't got the maximum out of the car yet as I'm not 100 percent happy with the balance but we are heading in the right direction. This track requires a lot of front-end grip on the tires, which is what we have to work on."

By the end of practice Coulthard’s McLaren teammate Mika Hakkinen was second fastest, and Barrichello was third.

"I'm pleased with our performance today," said Hakkinen, who is in Austria battling the flu. "We went through a lot of work and were consistently quick and experienced no major problems. I'm looking forward to this weekend on a track which I always enjoy."

Hakkinen has won two of the past three Austrian Grands Prix.

Ralf Schumacher was fourth fastest, followed by brother Michael Schumacher. Juan Pablo Montoya was 11th fastest, and 1999 Austrian Grand Prix winner Eddie Irvine was 12th fastest.
