Mclaren With A Disadvantage?

McLaren is second in the Constructor’s standings with 30 points and driver David Coulthard is tied with Michael Schumacher for the lead in the driver’s standings and has one win this season.

A bird’s-eye view of its place in Formula One this season seems pretty attractive, but team technical director Adrian Newey said last week he thinks McLaren is at a disadvantage, partially because of the weather, and partially because the team is based in Britain.

Come again?

"Last week we had very poor weather conditions at Silverstone, which is fine if you want to do wet testing, but unfortunately it was one of those annoying days where you either had to sit and watch it come down because it was too wet or it was drying too quickly so you didn't have consistent conditions,” Newey said. “It wasn't ideal. It's one of the problems that British teams do face."

On top of the weather problems that plague England every Spring, Newey said most of the team’s testing is done in France, which doesn’t really make sense.

"We'd like to test in France next week but we have a problem getting trucks across France because it's a holiday,” he said, referring to Easter. ”If we had wanted to test in France next week, we would have had to have left in the middle of last week because you're not allowed to travel on a Bank Holiday in France or any weekend, or any day off. It's this time of year that is the drawback."

All in all, Newey said, it may seem minor but it’s just one of those little things that keep McLaren from fully competing with Ferrari.

"It would be nice to have our own test track in a warm climate such as Ferrari," he said. "But obviously there are pros and cons. British teams perhaps have other advantages over Italian-based teams elsewhere."
